Topological insulators are characterized by insulating behavior inside their bulk, coexisting with gapless edge states on their surface. It was previously established that a trivial insulator can be made topological by the application of time-periodic perturbations, to yield a so-called "Floquet topological insulator". Here we generalize this idea to systems with space dependnent external perturbation, and show how this can be used to manipulate the electronic properties of such systems using light.
