Fractional Phases in Partially Gapped 1D systems

We predict and demonstrate the existence of fractional phases in 1D constructions which may be implemented using semiconductor quantum wires as well as spin chains and cold atoms. These interacting two channel systems with broken time reversal symmetry exhibit characterizing universal fractional macroscopic observables in the fermionic and bosonic setups alike. Microscopic two leg ladder models are numerically studied to manifest the effect and support the field theoretical calculations.
