Progress with RPWELL particle and UV-photon detectors

The ever-growing complexity of future experiments in particle and astroparticle physics, nuclear physics and some applications, require the development of advanced radiation detectors. The rapid evolution of Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGDs), taking over the “traditional” wire chambers - is one recent example. We will unveil the properties of the recently proposed Resistive Plate WELL (RPWELL) MPGD. This robust instrument, incorporates a single Thick Gas Electron Multiplier (THGEM), coupled through an “avalanche-quenching” resistive plate to a patterned readout electrode. It operates in a “discharge-free”, high-gain mode, at reasonable radiation flux, yielding sub-millimetre localization resolution and a few ns scale timing accuracy. Its properties as particle detector and (CsI-coated) UV-photon detector will be presented. Potential applications will be briefly discussed.
