Schwinger effect in a tunnel junction

We have found an unexpected mapping between quantum mesoscopic conductors (tunnel junction) and spinor QED physics Hamiltonians. We propose to use this mapping in order to better understand and observe in mesoscopic setups, still elusive spinor QED phenomena, e.g. coherent pair creation from a QED-vacuum (Schwinger effect).
