TASFID - A Scintillating Fiber detector

Erez Cohen  ,  Nikolay Pilip  ,  Eli Piasetzky  ,  Yair Shamai
School of Physics and Astronomy, Tel Aviv University

A brief description of an under-development Scintillating Fiber detector will be presented.

The main issues under study which will be reviewed are as follows:

The TArget Scintillating FIber Detector (TASFID) is under design and testing by Tel-Aviv University since mid-2012, aiming to act as a beam detector in the low momentum muon/electron/pion π M1 beam line at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. The detector should allow particle identification and momentum determination for the MUon-proton Scattering Experiment (MUSE) that will address the proton radius puzzle.

  1. The Scintillating Fiber timing resolution.
  2. The efficiency of the detector for particle detection.
  3. The geometry of the detector.

During June-2014 a test run was preformed at PSI. For this purpose, a prototype of TASFID was constructed, consisting of one layer of 8 round SCSF-81 (Kuraray) type SciFi, 2mm in diameter, 10cm long. A brief description of the results from the June-2014 test run will also be presented.
