The photophysical properties of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and proteins and their key constituents, with respect to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, are affecting life and therefore of considerable interest. It was anticipated that by studing pyrrole, considered as a simplified model of the building blocks of these important biomolecules, an understanding regarding the processes that these molecules undergo through their interaction with photons will be obtained. In this work1,2 the photodissociation of vibrationally excited pyrrole is studied for the first time, in attempt to reveal details on the intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) and on the role played by vibrational excitation in inducing UV electronic excitation and unimolecular transformations.
